Blocks

The fundamental unit of legal work

Blocks

Blocks are the individual building blocks that make up a Routine. Each Block represents one clear legal task with a distinct outcome.

How Blocks Work

Whenever you drag a step into a Routine, you are placing a Block. Blocks follow a strict checklist:

  • Inputs: Forms, documents, or data passed from the prior step.
  • Execution: AI analyzes/drafts or a human completes the action.
  • Outputs: Signed documents, analyzed data records, or finalized drafts.

If Fallback to Human is enabled in your Routine's configuration and an AI Agent fails to process a Block (e.g., the document is corrupt or unclear), the system seamlessly bounces the task to a human assignee so deadlines are not missed.

Types of Blocks

AI-Compatible Blocks

Tasks where Seraa AI does the heavy lifting:

  • Drafting: Generates contracts, letters, and documents from prompts and matter context.
  • Review: Checks documents against your firm's Rulebooks for compliance and risk.
  • RunExtractions: Pulls structured data points from documents into an organized grid.
  • ExtractReminders: Scans documents for obligations, deadlines, and renewal dates.
  • Report: Synthesizes data into executive summaries and analytical reports.
  • Compliance: Runs compliance-specific checks against regulatory standards.
  • EthicsReview: Evaluates work against ethics frameworks (Research workspaces).

Human / Hybrid Blocks

Tasks requiring human execution or judgment:

  • IntakeForm: Collects structured information from clients or team members.
  • Upload: Requests file delivery from an assignee.
  • Approval: Requires sign-off from a designated reviewer (e.g., partner approval).
  • Signing: Routes documents for e-signature collection.
  • CarbonCopy: Sends a copy of output to specified recipients without requiring action.
  • DataCollection: Gathers research data or metrics (Research workspaces).
  • Custom: A flexible block type for tasks that do not fit standard categories.

Coming Soon

The following blocks are defined in the system but not yet available in the block library: Discovery, Filing, Hearing, ServiceOfProcess, SettlementReview, Publication, GrantMilestone, and Replication.

Flowing Work

Blocks automatically pass their finished work to the next step.

  1. Passing Data: An Intake Form block gathers a client's name. A Drafting Block uses that name to produce a letter.
  2. Evolving Documents: An AI Review block highlights risks in a newly uploaded contract. The subsequent Drafting Block uses those highlights to generate a safer counter-draft.
